Today we discussed how Rocket Math would be utilized in our classroom. We will be practicing our fact skills almost every morning after announcements and the bringing our fact sheets home to practice for homework.
With math facts, the best things students can do is practice! The Rocket Math system was designed based on research regarding how students learn and memorize best. The parent letter that was sent home this evening will help describe the best way to practice with your child. Practicing these facts should take no more than 5 to 10 minutes each night.
Math
We learned about how knowing basic facts can help us know more complicated fact extensions.
For example, if we know that 3 + 8 = 11, then we also know that 30 + 80 = 110 and 300 + 800 = 1,100. What's more is that knowing 3 + 8 = 11 can even help us solve problems like 13 + 8 = 21 (13 is 10 larger than 3 and so our new sum will be 10 larger than 11) and 43 + 8 = 51 (43 is 40 larger than 3 and so our new sum will be 40 larger than 11).
Mrs. Billstone's math tests have been graded and are ready to come back tomorrow. There is just one student we are waiting on to get to finish the test.
Writing Workshop
We reviewed our end goals by taking another look at the writing checklist and writing/revising to make sure we have included all of the parts we needed. After some time to write tomorrow, we are going to have our partners check over our writing using the same checklist.
Reading
We practiced making connections-to-self in our guided reading time today as our new books were introduced. Allowing the text to remind us of something that has happened in our own lives allows us to better understand the text by allowing us to understand the character's feelings, make predictions, and picture what is occurring in the text.
Homework
Read 30 minutes (Our reading logs will be introduced sometime this week, hopefully!)
