Today students completed the color, texture, and smell tests on each of the minerals in their kits. Soon, we will begin reading informational articles on specific minerals and having to use evidence from the text and our own tests to determine which minerals in our kit are best described by the articles.
Math
We had the opportunity to review all that we've learned in unit 9 about multiplication. Students have made great progress in this area and will continue to make progress as we continue to build on and use these concepts throughout the remainder of the year.
On that note, the importance of basic fact mastery cannot be over stated. Students should be practicing their facts in some form each and every day at school as well as at home. Feel free to email me to obtain resources for fun ways to practice facts at home. You can also check out the math section of this site to access some helpful websites.
Read Aloud
Our focus this week has been on theme. Today students engaged in a literature discussion during which they had to decide on the primary theme of our read aloud and support their opinion with evidence from the text. Students did an excellent job articulating their opinions!
Writing
Today we learned strategies for strengthening our argument even more. We learned that one way to strengthen our argument is to "say more" and that in order to say more, we can use examples from real life, cite evidence from interviews and surveys, and input mini-stories that support the point we are trying to make.
