Today in science, students had the opportunity to observe their growing plants. Some of the plants had developed new forms- flowers! We will be taking a closer look at the parts of a flower later this week and learn more about the importance of pollination.
Math
Today in math students took their knowledge of spinners to the next level by having to design spinners with specific criteria. For example, students were asked to design a spinner in which blue was twice as likely to be landed on as red. Some of the spinner designs were tricky but the students persevered to figure them out and seemed to enjoy doing so! Tonight's homework will focus on this same type of activity.
*Note: One strategy for helping students know how to divide the spinner into a certain number of equal parts was related to using the degree markings around the outside of the spinner. For example, if the students needed to split the spinner into 6 equal parts, they solved 360/6=?. To solve this problem, many students used the following fact family problem: 6 x ?=360 and then used their knowledge of basic facts (6 x 6 = 36) to solve for the unknown. Please feel free to encourage and support your child in this type of process as they complete their homework this evening.
Reading
We are continuing to focus on vocabulary strategies this week. Feel free to ask your child to teach you the "chant and moves" we've made up to help us remember the strategies we've learned so far.
Writing
Students had the opportunity to work on their fairy tale drafts today. Their goal is to be finished two drafts of the same story by tomorrow. Next week, students will be given the opportunity to write their own fairy tales!
